There’s no right way to do Move A Mile. Walk, wander, stop, chat, eat, drink, make something, discover somewhere new and enjoy Stockport.

Dress for the weather! It’s Stockport, so anything could happen! Wear sensible footwear and bring something waterproof if the forecast suggests it. There are some hills, so comfortable shoes are definitely recommended.

Move A Mile is about much more than walking a mile. It’s an opportunity to explore somewhere you might not normally go, discover something new, meet people, support local businesses, get moving and have a bit of fun along the way.

FAQs

What is it?

Move a Mile is a free event organised by two Community Interest Companies called The Coping CIC & GRIT Studios CIC. The aim of the event is to bring the community together to move a mile, celebrating creativity & movement. There will be free skate lessons, live street art & music, a silent disco, break-dancing, creative activities to get involved in & skate jams all happening along the way.

Where is it?

Stockport. We’re creating a mile trail from GRIT Studios Canal Street, all the way through the Underbank area, to GRIT Studios Kingston House. Activities are happening all the way along the mile.

What time?

Activities from 11am - 4pm.

Is There Food & Drink?

There is plenty of places to buy food and drink along the way. Also Hustle Coffee at Kingston House, and Tibetan Kitchen and Runaway Brewery at Canal Street.

Do I Need a Ticket?

Nope. But if you want to participate in the activities we ask that you sign up for a free Eventbrite ticket, so we know who joined us. This helps us apply for funding and sponsorship in future to keep these events inclusive and free. You may also need to sign a waiver for higher risk activities. Follow the purple buttons to get your Eventbrite ticket.

Is it for Kids?

Absolutely, but please make sure under 16s are with a responsible adult at all times. Anyone under 16 must wear a helmet for any skate activities.

Is it Accessible?

We want everyone to move a mile in their own style, so the route is as accessible as possible with ramps, pavements & pedestrian crossings.

How Do I Get There?

Bus: The bus interchange is on the route so any bus arriving at Stockport interchange should land you right onto the mile!
Train: Stockport station is a 10 minute walk to GRIT Studios Kingston House.
Car: There is no parking available at either of the GRIT Studio sites due to road closure and carpark space being used. However there are plenty of carparks near to the mile route and some free street parking on Sundays too.

Are There Toilets?

There are loads of businesses along the way with toilets, but Stockroom is the best place for toilets.

What Shall I Bring?

Expect all weather, it’s Stockport! Decent shoes for walking.

What if I'm Late?

There are all sorts of activities happening between 11am-4pm so just turn up to any of the activities marked on the map and have a wander along the mile in your own style!

Can I Skate?

Yes! Beginners, the free lessons are for you. They are happening on Canal Street 11:00-13:00 & 14:00-16:00 on a first come, first served basis. Sign ups start from 11am and you will need to sign a waiver. There are limited spaces. If you are an experienced skater, you can skate at your own risk on the tour lead by Chambers Skate Shop. There are inclusive skate jams & sessions happening on the route with prizes and cash for tricks landed and vibes created! You must sign a disclaimer and all under 14s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
